As you have been recently informed, the Ethiopian federal court has announced that effective March 1st (Ethiopian calendar), all adoptive families must appear in Ethiopia for their court appointment in order to make their adoption final under federal law. This ruling will apply to all cases filed after this date. The ruling will not apply to all cases filed prior to March 1st (Ethiopian calendar). If you have any questions regarding this ruling and how it affects your case specifically, please do not hesitate to personally contact our office and we will do our best to answer all of your inquiries. Due to this ruling, you may have to travel twice to complete your adoption.
Are there any alternatives?
Once you have been approved for court, only one parent (not both) can return for the embassy appointment. If you stay at the BFAS guest house, we will waive 50% of your guesthouse fees for your second trip. We will also work with the US Embassy to determine your options for obtaining an escort visa once the child is adopted in the country.
Please note that false media allegations and negative public postings negatively affect the Ethiopian government’s outlook on adoption as adoption is already a last resort for the government as a method to address the needs of vulnerable children in Ethiopia.
